There are many kiters knows that Sri Lanka is blowing but a few managed to ride the kite in the lagoons of the island. Indeed, there will be about a dozen windless days for the year and the rest of the blowing well in the most popular place for kitesurfing in Sri Lanka - Kalpitiya on the West coast. Kalpitiya is a peninsula which separates Indian ocean from the lagoon Puttalam, there will be a place for riding on the flat water in the lagoon and there is an ocean for those who prefer the wave-riding. The best time to kitesurf in Sri Lanka is perhaps the period from May to September when the warm winds blow from dawn to dusk.
The west side of the island is famous for the popular spot for kitesurfing Negombo which has a lagoon and located just 20 kilometers from the Colombo airport.
The length of the beach is about 5 kilometers and it has quite unpleasant tidal waves but the plus is that you can kitesurf with the down wind from Nyamagana to Negombo along the beach for about 6 kilometeres. There are many beaches and restaurants and the service is more developed in Negombo, whereas in Kalpitiya all is quiet and authentic and, accordingly, the stay will cost much cheaper.
